Where every Mexican itinerary should take you
I don’t know about you, but when I think of Mexico, it usually involves blue skies, lots of sun, and the beach. Well, that was what I thought before I spent some time exploring beyond the coastline. While the popular beach haven of Riviera Maya and Tulum are taking up a lot of space on Instagram feeds, and for good reason, there are other places to discover and explore.
One of these is the very special, San Miguel de Allende; a colonial-era UNESCO World Heritage site in Mexico’s central highlands, best known for it’s well preserved and VERY photogenic Colonial and Spanish architecture. But more than that, San Miguel de Allende has a charm and allure that is very hard to pinpoint exactly why it draws you in; but it does; Every.Single.Time.
From it’s quaint streets, to stunning architecture, it’s friendly people to local watering holes, there is something to discover at every turn – and that’s just what you’re able to see from the outside! Because, behind a multitude of beautiful doorways, lie private residences, boutique hotels and stores with exquisite open-air courtyards, stunning greenery and beautiful natural daylight, welcoming you into another world as you step in from the street.
This is a place where you don’t really need a plan. To walk the cobbled streets and lose yourself in the beauty of your surroundings is something I would highly recommend. With the sun shining and the people smiling, it really is a place that is made for getting lost and going with the flow. But if you are someone who does need a little more structure in their day, there is plenty to keep you occupied, like taking a hot air balloon at sunrise to really get a sense of the city’s beauty from above or horseback riding across the terrain to a nearby canyon and natural river. If staying at ground level is more your thing, the boutiques, spas and gastronomic experiences on offer won’t fail to disappoint.
Whilst the city’s beauty is enough to put a smile on anyone’s face, where you choose to stay also plays a key role in your overall experience. There are many beautiful properties to choose from, but an absolute favorite of mine is Rosewood San Miguel de Allende; a true diamond shining within one of one of the most beautiful places I have visited. The hotel strikes the perfect balance of luxury, culture and exceptional service, and provides a welcome sanctuary to enjoy after a day of exploring.
